A combined dress rehearsal for The Ball, plus an impressive pipe band display (even if I say so myself!) for the Toondah Probus Club in Ormiston. |
BBC Competition Results 2012
After a long competition circuit the year has ended for pipe band competitions. Competing at three of the major events this year, the BBC Old Collegians managed to rack up two first places earlier in the year and a second last weekend, (which is a huge improvement for the band that has become very familiar with the 'Best of the Rest' trophies over the years). A big congratulations to the winners of the grade 4, Maclean and District! The BBC competition will hopefully be back next year, slotting in before the annual Maclean competition (just before Easter). |
Next Sunday - Brisbane Boys' College
It's nearly here! The first pipe band competition at BBC in Toowong will be held on the 22nd of July. Along Moggill Road you will be able to see all of the action as the mass bands march along the large football field on the school grounds. Plenty of room for spectators, this is one Sunday you will not want to miss! For more information, please feel free to email our band through the contact page. |
We Are On Youtube!
'Youwhat?' The band is up on the internet with performances from Yandina, Maclean Aussie Champs and a few other clips. You can find all of the videos either here or in our video tab to the left. |
BBC Pipe Band Competition
Here it is! For the first time ever Brisbane Boys' College will be hosting a competition on the 22nd of July. Hard at work, Mr Stevie Stanley has put a lot of time and effort into this event that looks to be spectacular. Great place for spectators as well with the Junior School Green being chosen as the competing ground. ![]() The Old Collegians hope to front a strong turnout to defend their home turf, as I suspect the school band will. Stay tuned for more news to come! |
2012 Maclean Highland Gathering
For the 108th annual competition, the band was once again looking forward to a weekend of bagpipes, drums, beer and dangerous quatities of pies. The combination of all of those ingredients however gave the perfect recipe for a stellar perfomance and an overall great time. The Easter weekend of 2012 began with the street march early on the Saturday morning with the bands once again providing the crowds with an outstanding show. Once the march was over and everyone was fully awake we began moving over to the pavillion where the competition was held. The band's performance consisted of a Medley and Marches set which were presented to the judges around 12:30pm. We knew we had prepared for a good show, but it still came as a bit of a shock when the news was heard. "Guys, we came first!" "First? First in what?" A reaction to a well deserved and hard working band. Both drummers and pipers scored high points in the judges eyes after weeks of hard practise. It also gave the band it's first opportunity ever to lead march off after Massed Bands at the end of the day. Accompanied by the first time performing school band, a few laps of the field were finished off to the sound of Funky Amazing Grace. Let's see if we can't make next year even better! |
Recordings from Band Practice - 26 Feb 2012
A very welcome improvement over last week's efforts - thanks everybody! |
Highland Ball recordings - full band
Here it is, warts and all... Alarming number of note errors showing up on the recordings. Good thing we've got a week left to get it right! Worth a listen if you get a chance. We will do so at band practice on Wednesday, but if you can make some time beforehand it would be good. Cheers, Dave |
Music Recordings for Highland Ball
As much for my own practice as anything else, I stayed behind after band practice this afternoon and recorded the music we'll be playing at the Ball this year. Not all of them worked out :-( I'll pick up the missing ones next week. In the mean time, I commend these to everybody - pipers and drummers - to put on your phone, mp3 player, or otherwise in your ears. They're not brilliant, but they set the tempos and feel of the music we're aiming for. There are a couple of mistakes in there - I did this with one take on each set 'cos I was knackered enough after band practice. And I even put in a deliberate note error in one of the tunes... A gold star and a chocolate frog for the first person to spot it! Cheers, Dave |
